Morse Micro Wi Fi Halow Solutions Redefining Connectivity For The IoT Era

Morse Micro is a rapidly growing fabless semiconductor company developing Wi-Fi HaLow silicon and software solutions that enable IoT devices to reach farther and last longer on batteries. A global company, Morse Micro is headquartered in Sydney, Australia, with offices in the U.S. (Irvine, CA), China and India. Since its launch in 2016, Morse Micro has focused on delivering long-range, low-power wireless connectivity for the expanding IoT ecosystem. The company has established the necessary ingredients to scale its Wi-Fi HaLow solutions for mass deployment: funding, engineering, partnerships, product development, certifications, operations, and a solid management and technical team. This team includes Wi-Fi pioneers and company founders, Michael De Nil and Andrew Terry, along with the original Wi-Fi inventors John O’Sullivan and Neil Weste and other wireless industry veterans, whose teams designed Wi-Fi chips into billions of smartphones.

Operating in the uncrowded, license-free sub-GHz frequency band, Wi-Fi HaLow technology was designed from the ground up for the unique requirements of the IoT, offering an unmatched combination of extended range, power efficiency, large network capacity, advanced security, Wi-Fi compatibility and native IP support. This unique mix of capabilities makes Wi-Fi HaLow a solid choice for long-reach, low-power IoT use cases in home and building automation, industrial IoT, smart agriculture, transportation, logistics and asset management, access control, security systems, smart city infrastructure, wearables and mobile devices.

Recent Wi-Fi generations (Wi-Fi 4, 5 and 6) offer fast data rates over short ranges, making them well-suited for high-resolution streaming services and other data-intensive applications. However, these Wi-Fi versions were not designed to meet the unique requirements of IoT applications. Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi HaLow portfolio solves the challenges of long-range, low-power connectivity in IoT applications, overcoming the fundamental weaknesses of existing Wi-Fi versions.

Wi-Fi HaLow is the most feature-rich Wi-Fi standard available that addresses the full range of IoT connectivity requirements without compromises. It offers a unique combination of capabilities and advantages that other wireless technologies cannot match:

• Long-range connectivity: According to recent field tests conducted by Morse Micro, WiFi HaLow signals can extend more than 3 km, making it an ideal connectivity solution for industrial automation, smart agriculture and smart city infrastructure.

• Superior penetration of barriers: Operating in the sub-GHz band, Wi-Fi HaLow signals can penetrate walls and other obstacles more easily than other versions of Wi-Fi operating at 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

• Lower power: Morse Micro’s low-power IC design enables extended sleep times and lower power consumption for battery-operated devices, achieving longer battery life durations than other existing Wi-Fi generations.

• Ease of use: Operating in the license-free sub-GHz spectrum, Wi-Fi HaLow eliminates the need for proprietary hubs or gateways, enabling a single access point to support 8,191 IoT devices

• Peace of mind: As a version of Wi-Fi adhering to the IEEE 802.11ah standard, Wi-Fi HaLow supports advanced security systems including WPA3.

Morse Micro is now the leading supplier of Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow system-on-chip (SoC) and module products. Morse Micro’s portfolio includes the industry’s smallest, fastest and lowest power Wi-Fi HaLow compliant SoCs and modules that enable wirelessly connected devices to achieve 10x longer range, covering 100x the area or 1000x the volume of traditional Wi-Fi networks. These products, combined with Morse Micro’s easy-to-use evaluation kits and reference designs, give early access partners and key customers the opportunity to evaluate the market-leading throughput, power efficiency, extended range and security features of the company’s Wi-Fi HaLow solutions.

Morse Micro Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow portfolio includes the MM6104 SoC, which supports 1, 2 and 4 MHz channel bandwidth. The higher performance MM6108 SoC supports 1, 2, 4 and 8 MHz bandwidth and is designed to deliver tens of Mbps throughput to support streaming HD video. The MM6108 SoC is in full-scale production, with shipments rolling out in volume.

The Morse Micro portfolio also includes the Wi-Fi HaLow MM6108-MF08251 module based on the MM6108 SoC. The MM6108-MF08251 product is among the first Wi-Fi HaLow modules to receive FCC certification. This accreditation supports Morse Micro’s vision to accelerate the commercial deployment of Wi-Fi HaLow technology, enabling customers to get to market faster. The FCC-certified module supports long-range connectivity for a wide range of IoT applications, from consumer and commercial environments to industrial to agricultural use cases. Designed in compliance with the IEEE 802.11ah standard, the module supports data rates up to 32.5 Mbps with programmable operation between 850 MHz and 950 MHz.

As the leading Wi-Fi HaLow innovator, Morse Micro has invested in considerable R&D to ensure the IoT ecosystem is ready with Wi-Fi HaLow SoCs and modules that deliver benefits beyond the capabilities of traditional Wi-Fi technology. Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow chipsets, modules, and reference designs are available now to be deployed by customers. Forthcoming IoT products based on Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow solutions will be Wi-Fi certification ready, benefit from multi-vendor interoperability, and accelerate time to market and consumer acceptance.

Morse Micro is at the center of the expanding Wi-Fi HaLow ecosystem that includes a growing list of ODMs, module makers, and new IoT devices, access points, routers, and bridges. Morse Micro’s ecosystem partners recognize the exceptional value Wi-Fi HaLow brings to the IoT market. Morse Micro is collaborating with Abode, Accton, AsiaRF, AzureWave Technologies, Chicony Electronics, Malmoset, Primax, Quectel, Silex Technology, Swann, Tonly Electronics, U-MEDIA, WNC, Xailient, and Zetify to enable Wi-Fi HaLow solutions spanning multiple IoT applications.

Morse Micro’s growing market momentum is attracting the attention of the electronics industry by commercializing one of the most significant innovations in long-range, low-power Wi-Fi connectivity in decades. In the initial stages of deployment, Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi HaLow technology is being used in long-range indoor and outdoor applications where traditional Wi-Fi solutions cannot reach and/or consume excessive power. Prime use cases include battery-operated security systems, wireless video cameras, and video doorbells. The benefits of Wi-Fi HaLow are being validated and designed into products by leading IoT device manufacturers worldwide. IoT products based on Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi HaLow SoCs and modules are now shipping, demonstrating the protocol’s distinct advantages in long-range, low-power connectivity for the IoT.
